Ultrasound in physiotherapy uses high-frequency sound waves to accelerate the treatment of an inflammatory condition. Depth of penetration is controlled through the frequency.

Interferential is most often used to treat conditions with muscle spasm, swelling, or joint pain resulting from an acute injury. It works on the same pain-gate theory as TENS and, like TENS, uses stick-on pads around the area to be treated.
